The Alpha Pup family of labels and distribution network really has nailed that whole Wonkified take on modern Hip Hop that's emerged out of the American West coast over the last couple of years, fuelling a number of imprints (including Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, and the impressively diverse Leaving Records) that have really come to embody the sound. But Alpha Pup is, of course, also a record label in its own right and this latest release on the label comes to us a from a mysterious lineup of producers that features Ikey Owens of The Mars Volta among others, weaving a psyched-out aesthetic in and out of a heavy line in squashed beats and percussive trickery. Opening track "Sci-Fidelity" is more old-school in its methodology, relying on the kind of spooked out palette that wouldn't have sounded out of place on any of Sixtoo's records, but by the time "Turbulence" rolls in we're on much more contemporary terrain, rolling off Casio melodies, reversed synths and an altogether more demented take on drum programming. "Orion's Belt Buckle" even makes a nod towards other kinds of low-end activities, making use of a gnarly ravey bass stab that sits brilliantly uncomfortably alongside a slowed down percussive flex - sort of sounding like Caspa or Rusko taken apart and rebuilt by someone like Dorian Concept - and it works a treat. All in all - a nicely varied and expertly executed full-length from a crew that knows. Recommended.
