ken ikeda - Kosame
For his latest album Ken Ikeda sets aside what he terms as "techno-ish sine waves" instead favouring the more organically wrought timbres associated with close and attentive listening to everyday domestic sounds. What makes Ikeda's music so unique is the manner of his relationship with these sorts of sounds: he uses a handmade instrument made from wood and rubber to engage with the naturally occurring sounds all around him, and this curious device becomes a medium of translation between the artist and the untamed frequencies that characterise his environment. Kosame is such an unusual work in that it highlights the interface between the hidden noises of all around us and the strange improvised musical interactions Ikeda has with them - in a sense it's as though he's playing his own life as if it were an instrument. The outcome of all this is an album that's rich in its diversity of sounds, yet feels unified by levels of tactile intimacy, texture and even undercurrents of humour running throughout.
