deadbeat - Radio Rothko
'Radio Rothko' is an exceptional studio mix of dub techno classics, past and present from Deadbeat. With a palette of 19 tracks the Canadian producer patiently nurtures a sublime blend of efficient techno minimalism, following in the tradition of classic mix CDs like Scion's 'Arrange & Process Basic Channel' or Richie Hawtin's 'DE9'. His attention to detail is way above and beyond what you'd expect from a mix nowadays, in a time when every DJ and his mate's dog has a mix on soundcloud. It's very easy to tell that this has been inched together, with each selection gradually developing a context for the next two tracks and so on. The groove is set with Various Artists (aka T++) on 'No.3 (Debit)' into Deepchord's gorgeous 'Grandbend', through to the Basic Channel's 'Quadrant Dub' and the cavernous reverbs of Pendle Coven's 'Exigen'. MLZ turns up again with his 'Dark Days' track woven into Quantec 'Electromagnetic Pulse' before we strike into the depths of the mix with a passage running from Monolake's alltime classic 'Static' to 2562's 'Redux' and onto Maurizio's 'M6A' and drawing to a close with Substance & Vainqueur's 'Reverberation'. Throughout the selection Deadbeat's blends are exquisitely subtle yet robust enough to demand dancefloor reactions, ensuring this a spot in the collections of any dubwise techno connoisseurs. Killer.
