ulrich schnauss - Quicksand Memory EP
Yes the rumours are true, and after years of fending off (or most probably, welcoming) comparisons to the great Cocteau Twins, Mr. Schnauss has cajoled the man himself into giving his own takes on two tracks from 'A Strangely Isolated Place'. I'll start with the new material on offer here, and the record kicks off with Rob McVey's version of 'Look at the Sky', a track taken from Ulrich's imminent full length 'Goodbye'. The first thing you might notice is that the sound is notably less 'electronic', with fat distortion, live-sounding drums, guitars and gauzy vocals taking centre-stage and those signature synthesizers almost nowhere to be seen. I suppose this is the direction Ulrich has been heading all the time though, taking his sound a little closer to 1990 every year, moving further into the den of purist shoegazing classics, and 'Look at the Sky' easily fits in snugly with the best of Lush, Curve and others from the era. Similarly, the second track here 'Medusa' (one of the highlights from the new album) goes for a full-on 'Loveless'-style assault on the ears, all bendy distorted melodies and whispered vocal parts. This is a track that simply has to be played at almost uncomfortable volumes, and reminds me of all the times i was crushed onto the railings at the front of gigs - you'll know what I mean when you hear the tracks. The EP is nicely rounded off by the two stunning Robin Guthrie remixes, and in true Cocteau's style he pulls the original tracks ('Gone Forever' and 'On My Own') down to a haze of romantic guitars and reversed voices which build into reverberating Cocteaus-esque pop crescendos. It's almost like they were never gone, and I challenge any self-respecting Cocteaus aficionados not to get tearful on listening to these tracks. What more can I say... an essential EP purchase in every way, and only one of these tracks is actually going to end up on the album (and this version is an 'edit' anyway), so what are you waiting for?
