bvdub - Dreams of Red Chambers
Brock Van Wey is currently one of the more interesting producers in Dub Techno, and certainly one of the most sought after. He has been running his own Quietus imprint for the last year, so far releasing a couple of hugely collectable releases from his own BVdub project and from fellow deep-minded brethren Quantec, with both releases selling out within a matter of hours. This third release once again comes to us from the man himself, splitting 45 minutes into four tracks of layered, atmospheric and beautiful dub reductions and ambient variations that fit the hand made packaging and label aesthetic beautifully. Bvdub's textures are dense and warm, incorporating dislocated found sounds and frayed synths with what sound like analogue processes to sublime effect. The opening track crackles and undulates with a beatless wash that's best compared with the towering work of Dan Abrams under the Shuttle 358 moniker, and in particular his defining "Frame" album for 12k - it really is that beautiful. Track two continues the introspective theme, but slowly introduces a wavering kickdrum and, for the first time, the hint of dub reduction that has characterised his productions for the Styrax label. Track three is much more overtly percussive, but even here there is a stagger and hesitancy that adds a kind of fragility that's far removed from the bare warehouse environs of any kind of dance music, while the closing track stretches the whole thing into a fuzzy hum of layered keys, filtered drones and shimmering, subdued melodies that leave a deep, lasting impression. This gorgeous album suits the bespoke nature of the packaging and the limited run - it just isn't music designed for mass public consumption, and will no doubt reward those of you lucky enough to snap up a copy before it disappears into the murky world of the collectors market. Essential Purchase.
