casino versus japan - Casino Versus Japan
Originally released on the now dormant Star Star Stereo imprint way back in 1998, this was the debut album from Casino Versus Japan. This lengthy body of work is divided into four sizable chunks, each one in turn sub-divided into parts, as if suggesting different sides of a proposed 2LP release. Perhaps more so than on later recordings there's an emphasis on languid ambience running through this, and there's far more of a soundscaping approach to this than anything you'd hear on the career-defining Go Hawaii. Like warm air currents, passages of the album seem to drift by gauzily, channelling wafts of hazy, intangibly nostalgic synths or filtered out field recordings, but when beats do enter into the equation they're big, billowy and warm. 'Names On Maps Of Venus' proves to be especially of note, peaking with 'Part 3', whose swingtime, trip-hop tinged drums seem to crumble under their own weight. 'Blue Vacation (Part 4)' also warrants a mention for its saturated low end and uncanny sense of effervescent heat. There's a lot to take in here: not only is the overall duration rather generous, but much of the tracklist is riddled with shorter, fragmentary interludes. Consequently, this is an album that's likely to keep you busy for a while. Erik Kowalski (the producer behind CVsJ) has been too quiet for too long, and in the absence of new work this serves as a worthy reminder of what makes his material so special. Highly Recommedned.
