bruce gilbert - Oblivio Agitatum
Oblivio Agitatum is billed as a bit of a milestone, arriving as the first new Bruce Gilbert full-length since his Table Of The Elements release Ordier (made in 1996 yet only released as late as 2004). The Wire founder announces his return with a work that helpfully echoes his This Way album, now reissued by Editions Mego on its 25th anniversary (incidentally, both albums come mastered by Russell Haswell). The title track fires up with a rattlesnake drone that rasps its way throughout a tense, uncompromising four-and-a-half minutes before the album's centre-piece, 'Zeros' plunges the listener into a deep, metallic ambience, littered with sci-fi sound effect twitches, gargling noise signals and a slapback static blast at the close. This sort of steely, futuristic drone tone is carried over into the concluding 'Isopyre', another shorter piece that gives this fine triptych a sense of balance and equilibrium. Highly recommended.
