Type Records regulars Peter Broderick and Ryan Teague line up alongside Mercury Prize-nominated Sweet Billy Pilgrim for this new venture on Loaf. This is the first installment of The Explorer's Club, Loaf's new monthly singles series featuring work by various pioneering artists from across the globe. This "London - Paris" edition gets underway with the modern folk balladry of Sweet Billy Pilgrim, the Buckinghamshire trio offering a beautiful, highly maudlin piece driven by fingerpicked guitars, banjo, organ and some incredibly tight vocal harmonies. Next comes the prolific Broderick, who offers an instrumental piece, building from airy, Hood-like acoustic post-rock figures before halfway through a string arrangement lifts the track to a different level of loveliness, gearing up towards a noisy peak with jagged bowstrokes and crashing cymbals. Completing the sequence is Ryan Teague's 'High Knoll',a minimalist piece based on choppy, interlocking, motoring acoustic guitar chords. It's a far cry from the lavish orchestrations of Teague's Coins & Crosses album, and shows a different, subtler side to the composer's repertoire. It'll be interesting to see where Loaf's Explorer's Club stops off next, because this first leg marks an auspicious beginning.
