dam-funk - Toeachizown
Stones Throw have teased us all enough already, so it's time for the full force of Dâm Funk's incredible 'Toeachizown' sessions. There's barely a head worth mentioning out there in the hiphop/crunkstepping/r'n'b/wonky universe who isn't totally smitten with Dâm Funk. I mean, his name says it all for a start, but anyone who has given time to his recordings has just been bowled over by the amount of electric funk that this guy ellicits from his machines. To give you a little bit of background, Dâm was a session musician in and around LA since the late 80's, playing genre defining synth arrangements on seminal recordings by Dr Dre, Warren G and Nate Dogg, whilst recording his own lo-fi but highly funked experiments capturing the spirit of prime era Prince, early Juan Atkins or classic Prelude and Slave records, not to mention his 'Funkmosphere' nights in LA whch have cultivated a musical renaissance rooted in Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro Funk. The synthual seduction starts with the now-classic 'Let's Take Off (Far Away)', laying down the formula of funk programmed Linn drum machines, Zapp-style talkboxes and boogie heated synths before dropping another 23 heavy-soul bombs, from the gorgeously silky 'Searchin' For Funk's Future', to the stupidly rude 'Killdat aka Killdatmuthafu*ka' showing the roots for all your Samiyams, Rusties and Slugabed's, further enforced by the electro-sex riffs of 'Candy Dancing'. A scorching essential for any boogie badasses - DO NOT MISS.
