2562 - Unbalance
Since his 'Aerial' LP ended up at the top of many end-of-year lists for 2008, Dave Huismans aka 2562 has been busy beavering away in the studio, conducting vital rhythmic experiments. The results can be found on 'Unbalance', certainly a contender for one of the best 'step albums of the year and another fine example of the colourful contours and rhythmic shifts occurring in the world of post-garage, dubstep and technofied house. As recent single 'Love In Outer Space' proved, he's allowed a spurt of synthetic colour to enter his sparse dub productions, just check the wandering off-track keys of 'Like A Dream' or cosmic synth gas elevations of 'Who Are You Fooling?' for evidence if needed. Much like his amazing DJ sets over the last years, the album also follows an unpredictable rhythmic curve from Detroit flexed garage on the Theo Parrish meets Wookie style of 'Flashback', to Mr Fingers crossbred with Pinch on 'Like A Dream' or step-wrecking syncopations on 'Yes/No' or 'Superflight'. Every element just seems to be torn from the many styles he loves and moulded until it fits, having the serendipitous thrill of a DJ who mixes two incongruous tracks but manages to make them sound like the sickest fusion imaginable. We may be reading too far into this, but the tesselated sleeve artwork (heavily indebted to Delta) is possibly a brilliant analogy of 2562's depth of pattern and colourful scope, putting the final touch to a wicked piece of rhythm science. An incredibly strong album and a huge recommendation for seasoned followers and newcomers alike.
