burning star core - Let's Play Wild Like Wildcats Do
C. Spencer Yeh is yet another uber-prolific experimental musical genius, he spends most of his time (one would think, given the amount the man puts out) sitting in a basement somewhere in Cincinnati soldering circuit boards and stamping on bits of plastic and recording the output, throwing it around to labels across the world for release on limited edition shoe polish coated lunchboxes or similar oddities. You know though, for some reason I actually like almost everything he does, like the similarly prolific Machinefabriek, Yeh's buzzing electronic experimentations just seem to work, and each record amazes me that little bit more. This particular full-length emerged back in 1995, but we've managed to get a handful of copies to finally unleash on those of you who might have missed it first time around. It sees Yeh in full-on experimental electronics mode, with the first track 'Mes Soldats Stupides (Demo)' taking Kraut/funk styled drums, horns and white noise and gradually fracturing them into a whirling mess of synthesized mayhem. It's something like Tangerine Dream jamming with the Isaac Hayes band, but at the same time sounds like nothing you've ever heard before. The second piece 'Clouds in my Coffee' is a darker beast altogether - a piece of devastating, resonating analogue drone which sounds something like the doomy ambient interludes you might find on a black metal record. Devastating stuff!
