In January of 2009 Portishead's Geoff Barrow formed a group with fellow Bristolian musicians Billy Fuller and Matt Williams. According to strict guidelines laid out by the group, the music was all recorded live in one room with no overdubs or repair, only using edits to create arrangements. As the title suggests, the recordings took place over a 12 day session, lending the set a cohesive atmosphere and time code. The results are a 12 twelve track album of intuitive and slightly ritualistic Krautrock themes with an often spooky spaciousness countered with a crushing quiet/loud dynamic. Tracks like 'Ham Green' are easily comparable to doom stoner outfits like fellow South Westerners Electric Wizard, while the band can just as easily adapt themselves to Neu-alike motorik styles on 'I Know' with a spiky but supple flexibility that proves why they've attracted so much attention (no, not just because it's Geoff Barrow is in the band, you cynic). Much like the roster of their Invada label, the group don't stop at any one sound or style for too long, shuffling off any harness before moving onto the next, like Mogwai-epic post-rock on 'Battery Point' onto Joy Division style reductions (minus the vocals) with 'Blagdon Lake' or Jesus and Mary Chain-stoned noise blues on 'Dundry Hill'. Beak are a fearsomely tight bunch and this debut comes very highly recommended.
