lightning bolt - Earthly Delights
When last we heard from Providence, Rhode Island duo Lightning Bolt, they were belting out some of the most relentless, technically precise noise-rock you could ever hope to hear, and four years on from the release of their 2005 masterpiece Hypermagic Mountain, it seems that blissfully little has changed. If anything, the playing is even tighter and the riffs are more artfully crafted than ever before but that fundamental, gut-wrenching essence of the duo remains unvarnished and transcendentally heavy. The album isn't entirely without texture however, and a track like 'Flooded Chamber' lets in some Sublime Frequencies-like displaced psychedelia while 'Rain On Lake I'm Swimming In' experiments with effects and beatless vistas. It's when Chippendale and Gibson are at full pelt that their virtues are most apparent, and the album's all-devouring momentum culminates in a twelve-minute tranced-out epic, 'Transmissionary', which really shreds the nerves with its mantra-like snarling repetitions.
