This debut release on the Leaving Records imprint is a superb new bulletin from the frontiers of psychedelic hip hop, taking the influences of classic J Dilla production with the more exuberantly avant-garde tendencies of the so-called wonky scene. Opening track 'parked' kicks off in a flurry of neatly sliced beats and sample exchanges reminiscent of early Daedelus, before 'thehides' - another gem - combines tripped-up funk loops, effortlessly warm breaks and the ambient crackle of rainfall lending the piece a strange sense of location. It's surreal and brilliant; hip-hop concrète, if you will. 'gobtween' is no less esoteric in execution, beginning with finely chopped funk loops and scalpel-like editing techniques only to swerve off into textural, contact mic sounds towards the end. Firing off, rhythmically warped harpsichords like a collision between Stereolab and Philip Glass, 'burns' is criminally brief at just 75 seconds in length, but there's so much more killer material to come you'll be quite content to let the tracks roll on by. Followers of Bullion and the like should most certainly get their listening gear around this, but more generally, if you're craving some visionary hip hop that hasn't lost touch with its roots, look no further.
