forest city lovers - Haunting Moon Sinking
Toronto's Forest City Lovers are a folk-pop trio whose feathery, string-laced sound relies more on the delicate interplay between instruments than it does any sort of conventional rock band dynamics. There's an unusual, perforated sound to the band that's probably due to comparatively quiet guitars and muted bass parts, meaning that lead singer Kat and an array of violins occupy the forefront of the mix much of the time, tending to drift off in a rather gentle fashion on tracks like 'Sullen Seas' and 'Waiting By The Fence'. Offering a more resolutely upbeat sound, 'Pirates (Can't All Sail The Indian Ocean)' brings to mind the baroque pop of The Decemberists or Sufjan Stevens, and similarly, 'Monsters' brings out the band's more theatrical tendencies. This second half of the album proves to be rather more energised - and you might say generally more successful - than the opening stretch of songs, which makes for a topsy turvy, though not unwelcome sequence of events.
