sophie's pigeons - Say Play Sway
Manchester' Red Deer Club have gone and snapped up Sophie's Pigeons, a local act who may do very well for themselves, because they sure sound very now-ish. You can hear traces of fellow 'big personality' girl popsters like Kate Nash or Florence And The Machine in here, with some nice, elaborate instrumentation thrown in, largely supplied from jaunty piano riffs that border on Bavarian bar-room soundtracks. The Manchester venue name-checking 'Stars and Garters' is a song that complains about people with big fringes, and bands who sing in accents not their own, all the while borrowing the vocal tics of Patti Smith, and to a greater extent, KT Tunstall. I do not much care for this song. It's one of those lyrical rants about being annoyed with scenesters and other bands, and they're never very entertaining. Having said that, the comedy oompah vibes go someway towards distracting you from the sardonic whinging. This is one of those releases that's likely to divide opinion, but it wouldn't be entirely surprising if Sophie's Pigeons got bigger labels in a fluster.
