dam-funk - Let's Take Off (Far Away)
This latest 12" from Dam Funk is without a doubt his sickest joint to date, bearing the proud inscription 'Recorded and sincerely funked without any loops or samples'. No biggie, you might think, but with this kind of music it's no mean feat. 'Let's Take Off (Far Away)' is pure analogue fetishism, with stuttering Linn drum machines and bouncy basslines that would send most 'wonky' producers into cold sweats. It's like a latter day Prince (sans vocals) or possibly Flying Lotus if he threw his laptop out of the window and opted for a rack of sequencers and vintage synths - and who can argue with that. Taking on 70s funk and digital disco, he reworks the template to suit his choppy, off-kilter sound giving the tracks a groove and an authenticity it's just impossible to re-create. If you're a fan of 2-step, nu-disco or any number of wonky hip hop albums that have slithered out in the last few months you owe it to yourselves to check this without delay. A huge recommendation - funky doesn't even start to describe it.
