The Strange Dreams of Paul White
paul white - The Strange Dreams of Paul White
Teasing us with a succession of brilliant 7"s and one achingly dope 12" over the last 18 months, Paul White has risen to claim status as one of the UK's finest beat breakers and psyched instro-hip-hop producers. While there's a tonne of this stuff flying around right now, White's idiosyncratic and rarified touch has lent his productions an intriguing personality that interests us far more than many of his peers. His day job as a library producer for Channel 4 and the BBC goes some way to explain the assortment of wonderfully disjointed samples and radiophonic ephemera that form much of the base material for the album, with a carefree and light fingered attitude towards plucking his sonic touchstones from their sources. This dilated scope and the hazy dream-like qualities of the results have lead to apt comparisons with both the RZA and Boards Of Canada, with a rugged beat driven aesthetic offset by rich sound designs and a psychedelically tipsy agenda. He's no slouch when it comes to his work rate either, including 21 tracks, all of which are previously unreleased bar the 4 from his 'One Eye Open EP', meaning a steaming hot serving of fresh-off-the-bar beats for the legion heads keeping one keen ear on his career. We could write a huge list of equally talented beatnuts stretching from DJ Shadow to Flylo and beyond but we won't, because this guy has his own style very safely locked down. A very high recommendation from us and most other self respecting beat lovers. Massive Recommendation!
