horsepower productions - When You Hold Me / Lets Dance
The damn fine folks at Tempa have just made our week with an unbelievably essential reissue of their first catalogue number from dubstep godfathers Horsepower Productions. Released just prior to their equally seminal 'Gorgon Sound' 12", 'When You Hold Me/Let's Dance' was a turn-of-the-millenium fusion that simply hadn't happened before, uniting the myriad of club styles they were experiencing in London at the time from D'n'B to Dub to Garage to Broken Beat to Techno and Rare Groove, they were all fed through the prism of Horsepower and refracted into an intoxicating dub-bassed concoction that reflected their surroundings. 'When You Hold Me' is so much more than just the sum of it's parts though, with techno stabs layered over film samples and garage bass bumping funk licks this is a densely genius frisson of styles that makes us sweaty just listening to it. The flipside cut 'Let's Dance' in contrast strips away much of the sonic foliage of the A-side to reveal a sleek garage riddim, wrapping dainty glass-cut melodies about a tightly wound 2-step rhythm with muscular bass undulations and one finely chosen sample adding splashes of colour and a literal instruction for bodies on the floor. Next to El-B's essential archive pack and the Groove Chronicles reissue scheme this is the perfect entry level gear for those dipping into 'nuumological history, but all theory aside this is just fu**ing killer dance music that we implore you to invest in. Awesome.
