A Path Through The Sun is one in a pair of new Root Strata editions, limited to a run of just 100 copies. This is perfect complimentary material to the music on last year's III album on Type, marrying modern day kosmische sounds with a more organic drone-folk style of instrumentation. Clocking in at just over half-an-hour A Path Through The Sun is an ideal length for developing ideas without running them into the ground; the first third of the record is devoted to 'Instant Light', which plays out like a mission statement, combining open-tuned acoustic guitars with E-bow driven feedback sustains. The follow-up comes in the shape of 'Pure Phase', whose oscillator suspensions further suggest parallels with the elemental drone-weaving of Mountains (heck, even their names are similar). 'Lunar Mansions' marks something of a change then, bringing more pronouncedly psychedelic elements to the fore, combining wah-wah guitar with trance-like drum patterns. 'Heathen Candle' further compounds this feel, venturing into Jewelled Antler levels of far-out-ness before the pastoral guitar and harmonium drifts of 'Shuruti' lulls the album to a close.
