mike huckaby & pacou - Sessions
Utterly sick twelve here - pitting Mike Huckaby alongside Pacou for one of the most developed, least-derivative dub techno sessions of the year to date. There's always been something impenetrable about Mike Huckaby's work, and particularly with his more recent S Y N T H outings and although he is a producer with a clear reverence for the same Berlin operatives that guide the likes of Deepchord, Styrax and Meanwhile imprints, he retains a robust percussive edge that's as indebted to classic Chicago and Detroit productions as it is to the archetypal sound of Basic Channel. Pacou, meanwhile, is a producer with well over 10 years and several dozen releases under his belt, and while there were rumours floating about that Pacou was some kind of moniker for Maurizio (such was the impact of his first release back in 1996), Lars Lewandowski has gone on to produce a varied and at times discordant catalogue of releases that have often had more in common with Rob Hood than with anything else that comes to mind. This collaboration was always going to be something of a treat - and the results are just tantalising. The "Main Mix" on the A-side merges a slick percussive structure with slow, fuzzy dub chords that bring to mind Monolake at his best, complete with towering hi-hats that eventually come in about halfway through. "The Filter" mix on the flipside is exactly that - a filthy, submerged variation that's rooted in the muck and filtered detritus of warehouse techno at its most organic and spaced-out, while the "Echo Mix" could have easily come from Maurizio's unreleased archive with its menacing dub treatments and incomprehensible washes of sound. A totally devastating 3-tracker, grab one while you can....
