various artists - Tempa Allstars Vol. 5
The constant thread running through the history of the dubstep phenomenon has been the Tempa label and their massively respected Allstars series, much like the feted Metalheadz box sets or Mowax's Headz series in the 90's. The latest installment takes a definitive overview of the current crop of Dubstep stars, mixing a couple of recognised older hands, Pinch, Skream and Luke.Envoy, with stars of the new skool Seven, TRG and Ramadanman, all tied together with a particularly dystopian and raved up theme throughout the set. Seven's 'Siren' initiates the ride with a smashing raver, and TRG follows up with a typically powerful wriggler on 'Surreal (5 AM), but Pinch's 'Motion Sickness' is the one we've been waiting for, with the Bristol badboy setting off some intertwined bleep syncopations for his first Tempa excursion, and easily the label's most experimental track. Skream's 'Hitch' does the trick, but sounds a little lacklustre compared to the firing Skreamizm pack last week, leaving Luke.Envoy's massively anticipated 'So' to live up to the hype with a a sick lesson in FWD rhythm construction, and Ramadanman to roll out on the smoking vibes with a proper blunted sub stepper.
