VARIOUS / DREAMSHEEP
various / dreamsheep - Dreamsheep (Vol.1)
The Dreamsheep label showcases the roster of talents it has to call upon via this rather brilliant compilation, featuring contributions by Richard Skelton of A Broken Consort, Gianluca Becuzzi and Fabio Orsi, The North Sea (aka Brad Rose of Digitalis Industries) and Brothers Of The Occult Sisterhood among various less established names. Area C's beguiling 'Sorcery' begins the album in a gentle, quietly blissful fashion, before Datashock's contribution gets ominous, supplying low frequency groans and a variety of splintered electronic emissions. Coming as no surprise whatsoever, the untitled Richard Skelton entry stands out by merit of its slowly bowed tones and swirling, hypnotic room ambience. Few artists can weave such a charged, emotive atmosphere from such a modest range of sounds. Becuzzi and Orsi channel some stately kosmische tones on 'At The End Of Summer', reaching another high point, but the tone of airy, positivity is soon ruptured by a gritty, cavernous piece from Robedoor and 'Release The Hounds' - a superb, tyrannical oscillator exercise from The North Sea. Closing the album, The Nether Dawn instill a more tranquil feel via their 'Orphan Section From The Endless Night', which is the sort of grainy, maudlin drone fare you'd expect to hear from Deathprod. Recommended.
