Legend has it that El-G's Laurent Gerard was discovered by accident, having left a copy of his demo in the back of Jack Rose's tour van. The Parisian songwriter bumbles through scrappy blues frameworks and detuned psychedelic folk, coming across as a Gallic Matt Valentine on the more adventurous cuts like 'He Gros', which is loaded up with wah-wah chaos and woozy oscillator drone. Perhaps even stranger is the lo-fi Tom Waits ramble of 'Al-Kado' with its weird organ swirl - or stranger yet, the pulsating krautrock rhythms of 'Vrouwen Min Mannen'. Even at its most ostensibly conventional, on a ballad like 'Tim et Henri', the central song structure is riddled with confusion and stray harmonies. Odd, but quite lovely.
