john hegre - Acoustic
Nordic noise figureheads John Hegre and Lasse Marhaug are probably best known for their work together as Jazzkammer (or latterly, Jazkamer). On this release they separate to produce individual tracks, and since this is a relatively old release (the compositions themselves date back to 2000) the tone is more closely aligned with the microsound and digital noise dissections of old, long before they joined the overcrowded ranks of black metal/noise bandwagoneers. It's a reminder of a golden age that saw artists making noise for noise's sake, and Jazzkammer were especially remarkable at this. These brilliantly caustic, abstract pieces recall Merzbow, albeit in a slightly more technical and fanciful mood than usual. The two untitled pieces that open the record are the work of Hegre, while Marhaug oversees the rest. You can certainly hear the common ground between these two, though on this occasion it's the less prolific Hegre who produces the most vital work - right up there with classic era Mego. Very highly recommended.
