yellow swans - Psychic Secession
What better way to commemorate the recently disbanded Yellow Swans than by revisiting their 2006 magnum opus Psychic Secession, a key text in modern American noise and abstract psychedelia. One of the things that made the duo so unique was their ability to unleash torrents of distortion and high frequency feedback, but without scrambling your brain with its sheer brutality. Instead there's a slow, almost meditative quality to their bad-trip soundscapes and fuzz-coated musings, which flip lucidly between miasmic, industrial blowouts (as heard towards the end of 'True Union') to a layered, fizzy machine music clatter on 'I Woke Up'. There's plenty of beauty buried underneath all those lurid tonalities and acrid feedback too, particularly on the drone-bank curio 'Velocity Of The Yolk', which combines amorphous sound masses, surreal vocals and microsound precision to mesmerising effect. Highly recommended.
