populous with short stories - Drawn In Basic
Andrea Mangia's relationship with Morr Music extends back to a time when the label could be quite reasonably thought of as an outlet for electronica, long before its diversification into the kind of sonic hybrids you might associate with the imprint's present day output. Just as Morr itself has done, the Populous sound has evolved from the warmed-up machine music of old to a more pop-friendly angle, even incorporating vocals, which come courtesy of collaborator Short Stories (aka Mike McGuire). Drawn In Basic retains the searching, wonderfully nerdish approach to sound sculpting Mangia has been applying to his work ever since his debut LP, Quipo (2002) and songs like 'Porcelain' are leant a good deal more authority thanks to the soft beat compressions and fizzing, tactile synth lines used in their arrangement. The Populous aesthetic has moved on considerably from the jazz and soul elements of previous album Queue For Love (2005) and now seems content to revel in the joy of circuitry. 'Raimondo' would seem to be a tribute to electronics pioneer Raymond Scott, featuring a modernised, updated version of the idiom Scott established via Manhattan Research Inc. You can hear these kinds of primal, blooping synth sounds throughout Drawn In Basic. Even on comparatively contemporary sounding pop outings like 'Bear Arms', Mangia still wears his proto electronic influence on his sleeve, and it helps carve out a strong and very specific identity for this fine collection of electronic pop songs.
