Viennese duo Tanz Baby! (I think the exclamation mark is compulsory) have to rate as one of the more peculiar pop groups currently in operation. There's a penchant for retro sound palettes on Liebe, fusing simple electronics with mariachi horns, Germanic ballad forms and the sounds of cabaret. At times Tanz Baby! Give the effect of sounding a bit as you'd imagine a Felix Kubin unplugged set. 'Alleine Sein' certainly fits in with that, sounding spooky with its organ-driven melancholy, and the likes of 'Traum Kleines Traum' betrays an Eastern European, gipsy influence. The duo sound at their most comfortable when trying out ballad formats, doling out accordion-based outings like the shanty-esque 'Gu Sein' or the folksy torch song 'Ich Bin Traurig (akustisch)' with a real sense of style. Undoubtedly Tanz Baby! carry off these sounds with a tongue-in-cheek approach, but it doesn't spill over into the ridiculous, instead Liebe remains a fine collection modern pop songs, lovingly revisiting outmoded songwriting genres with a real sense of passion and authenticity.
