This 2007 album from Finnish electronic pioneer Pekka Airaksinen takes as its subject matter the jazz and big band music of the '40s and '50s, looping and contorting old records in a raw, primitive fashion. Think about what Jive Bunny did to Glenn Miller, but in a more acceptable, Steve Reichian fashion - that's pretty much what's going on in this plunderphonic mess. The results are actually quite startling at times: 'Waves Follow Waves' is an especially effective piece of radiophonic-style tape manipulation, and detuned drone pieces like 'Why All This Prelude' make for effective sci-fi-tinged conjurings. It's not hard to see why Airaksinen has been so highly regarded by Stephen Stapleton either: you can hear a similar thread of witty experimentation running through 'My Tongue Swore, My Mind Didn't' as you might encounter on certain Nurse With Wound compositions. Very weird, and as an album it's fairly prone to repeating itself (well, what do you expect from a loop-based record?) but there's plenty of fun and intrigue in the sheer otherness of this music.
