Boomkat product review for:

kemialliset ystavat - Taju

Fonal band Kemialliset Ystavat did a bit of moonlighting on the Peippo label for this release, which was originally issued as a cassette, documenting a live recording made at the town of Hyvinkaa, which is made out to sound like a seriously sinister place to hang around - the label go on about pyramids and ritual slaughter, though presumably the local tourist board would have a slightly different take on its heritage. Regardless, the band sound on fine form with ridiculously intense performances making the whole thing sound like several different bands are all playing wildly different pieces simultaneously. Over the opening twenty minutes that constitute the first track, this can all get a bit overwhelming, and the musicians revel in a noisy state of pandemonium, the whole affair layered into a psychedelic mish-mash, with snatches of xylophone and organ offering some sort of melodic focus within the chaos. The second 'side' is rather shorter, clocking in at just over seven minutes and is ushered in by a pulsating organ and what sounds like a one-note solo played on a kazoo. It's an instant headache, but you've got to admire their outside-the-box thinking.
