vladislav delay - Demo(n) Tracks
Welcome back Mr Delay. Yes, you've grown your hair and had a right old laugh playing for the chicks with your loved-up house monster Luomo, slapping on the glitter and taking a break from the deep side we all admired and loved you for all those many moons ago. "Demo(n) Tracks" is really quite a wonderful return to form from a producer who is quite obviously capable of applying his skill to any musical challenge laid down before him. Carrying on from his groundbreaking material for Chain Reaction and Mille Plateaux, this is actually the second release on his own Huume label, the first being his first ever 12" - the "Kind Of Blue" EP from all the way back in 1997. 13 tracks present themselves here (each given an utterly unpronounceable Finnish title) - digesting and evolving the sound of spacious sub-dub emissions into a masterwork of sculptured instrumentals and triumphs of warm minimalism. "Kasvot Uivat" is a perfect example of Delay's ability to extract immense emotional engagement from a barely-there sliver of suggested melody and neon tones. "Kohmeessa Alt" is more overtly dubbed-up, although compared to the most recent work of contemporaries Pole, Deadbeat and Kit Clayton - we're once again striding on positively bare terrain......and it's all the better for it. The album ends with the ambitious "Kainuu", which hints at where Delay's production savvy may take him next - giving the breathless atmospherics a rude awakening with jazz lounge samples floating in and out of the mix with an expert narcossis that you just can't quite decipher but that sounds absolutely, totally sublime. "Demo(n) Tracks" is one of the finest emissions in this particular sub-genre for absolutely ages, a masterpiece of minimalism and atmosphere that fans of everyone from Mike Ink's Gas project, through to King Tubby, through to Brian Eno and Basic Channel will adore. Huge recommendation.
