the residents - Eskimo
This 1979 album by avant-garde figureheads The Residents is a remarkable thing. It was supposedly designed as a portrait of the culture, rituals and traditions of the Inuit peoples of the Arctic, but rather than using the legitimate, actual Inuit language, the music is comprised of wordless nonsense chants, pseudo tribal percussion and field recordings of ice flows and other such odd sounds. The album plays out like a drama based on various aspects of life at the North Pole, each designed to tell a story or depict a specific cultural event, from the 'Festival Of Death' to 'The Walrus Hunt', The Residents offer a kind of abstract impression. This reissue includes a 32-page booklet bound in hardback.
