various / rune grammofon - Runeology 3
A third label sampler from one of the most persistently exciting labels around, Runeology 3 draws together tracks from some of the label's most notable releases of 2007 as well as one or two cuts from forthcoming albums, not due until next year. Arve Henriksen commences the selection with 'Leaf And Rock' one of the most sombre, understated moments from his Strjon album, taking the form of a duet for Henriksen's inimitable trumpet style and muffled, melancholy piano chords. The finest song from Susanna's Sonata Dwarf Cosmos full-length, 'Hangout' is up next, leading into material from the much-overlooked post-country duo Opsvik & Jennings and a preview of the forthcoming Food album. Almost certainly Rune Grammofon's most essential release of 2007, Supersilent's 8 is represented by '8.6', one of the group's most esoteric and electronic works, featuring some alien falsetto tones from Arve Henriksen set alongside Deathprod's stuttering Autechre-like pulses. The quality keeps on coming with experimental weirdness from Ultralyd, The Shining and the wonderful Alog, before we get a glimpse of forthcoming live albums from Scorch Trio and Humcrush, all captured with typical Rune Grammofon depth and clarity. Rounding off the album, you'll hear an excerpt from Ole Henrik Moe's challenging violin assault 3 Persephone Perceptions and a three-minute blast of MoHa!'s disruptive noise emissions. Bargain.
