wooden wand - Blood Oaths Of The New Blue
Wooden Wand's 'Blood Oaths of the New Blues' is "Sunday morning's wake and bake" record to "Briarwood's Saturday night revelry", again for long-running UK independent, Fire Records. Shapeshifting neo-folk priest James Jackson Toth presents some of his finest whiskey-and-weed-soaked vocals backed by his trusty instrumental rustlers - David Hickox, Janet Elizabeth Simpson, Jody Nelson, Brad Davis and Les Nuby III - who appear under the Wooden Wand banner on consecutive records for the first time, and at the same studio - Ol Elegante in Homewood, Alabama. The result is a mildly spooked, drowsy side of slow-burn country and folk with an underlying doomy outlook finding spiritual analogues in Nico's 'Desertshore', Peter Hammil's 'A Black Box' or Dino Valente's eponymous solo LP, reconciling the further flung corners of Toth's oeuvre with psychedelic vision and dusty, rambling atmospheres.
