ben ufo - FABRICLIVE 67: Ben UFO
The UK's pre-eminent DJ and dancefloor tastemaker heads up one of his first commercially available mixes - for London's Fabric institute. One year on from his diverse and killer Rinse mix, the focus here is firmly on the spectrum of house music, contextualising vintage material from Mr Fingers, Herbert and Fluxion alongside fresh cut grooves from Juniper, Jam City and Blawan, and all shades between. Combining 28 tracks in 72 minutes, Ben's mixing is measured and well paced, rather than rushed and pacy, juicing the natural structure of stripped-down grooves to build a sensual session greater than the sum of its parts. In the first section the groove dilates and contracts between NYC-style house from Delroy Edwards and Sex Tags Mania, and Hessle aces including an exclusive run of Pev & Kowton's 'Raw Code' swagger, moving thru Midwest nuggets from Chicago Skyway and K-Hand to a wicked sequence of Minimal Man's 'Consexual' - Jam City's 'Club Thanz' - Herbert 'Take Me Back'. He's inspired again with Mr Fingers' amazing 'I'm Strong' threaded into Shackleton vs Kasai Allstars' 'Mukuba Special' and Kyle Hall & Kero's 'Zug Island', or flexing from Juniper's 'Jovian Planet Ace' into A Made Up Sound's 'Malfunction (Despair)' and Grain aka Artwork's 'Untitled' rarity to Bandshell's 'Perc' exclusive for Liberation Technologies, just like it ain't no thang. It's a clinically judged yet intuitive approach and effect that's earned him tonnes of followers and is bound to connect with folk far beyond the house mainstream.
