bambounou - Orbiting
With only a handful of 12"s to his name since 2010, Frenchman Bambounou pulls up to 50 Weapons in his ghetto-proof debut album 'Orbiting'. It's gotta be the most rapid ascendance of anyone on Modeselektor's label, but it certainly doesn't sound rushed or half-baked: this is a raw yet debonaire sound, equal measures mucky, technoid trainer funk and tucked-in, iced-out swagger. Sounds are sourced from current and classic Chicago/London/Berlin styles and filtered with a certain how-you-say? sorta Gallic suaveness, taking us from the DVA or Fis-T-like mutant Bass/Haus ov 'Any Other Service' through the sub-loaded shimmy of 'Mass' to rutting technohouse on 'Data', jukeddopeness with French Fries on 'Let Me Get' or Actress-meets-Chain Reaction techno on 'Splaz'. Together with the tidy synth-terludes and thanks to his robust productions values - subs go all the way down, drums are built to bang on a good system - this album has happily exceeded our expectations.
