From just about anyone else it might be a bit much to hear they’re embarking on a one-man forty-five track opera entitled ‘Matricidal Sons of Bitches’, but from Fiery Furnaces Matthew Friedberger it’s not even close to the strangest thing he’s been involved with. In fact this format seems perfectly suited to his ever-evolving skewed sensibilities, allowing him to lay down fractured sample-based compositions, quirky electronics, woozy jazz and anything else that comes to mind and having it all fit under the banner of ‘soundtrack’. It’s an engaging, if hyperactive listening experience, and while there are clear paths to be made to the hauntological experiments of Ghost Box et al, Friedberger is really out on his own, as ever.
