mfh (pump) - 1979 - 85
MFH was the earliest musical incarnation of Andrew Cox and David Elliott, who'd later release two classic and sorely overlooked post-punk LPs as Pump. '1979-85' documents selections from their nascent output on YHR (York House Recordings), a self-curated DIY cassette label named after their campus accommodation at Sussex University and also home to other releases by Maurizio Bianchi, Asmus Tietchens, Conrad Schnitzler, Cluster & Farnbauer, among many others. Inspired by the revolutionary punk tactics and aesthetics of Cabaret Voltaire, TG & Industrial Records, they pooled what equipment they had - cheap synths, short wave radio, electric razor, calculator, and more - to record stripped down, itchy and quietly compelling instrumentals, plus some with barely there or possessed vocals, in their bedrooms and the Uni radio station, as heard on their 1980 issues, 'First Move' and 'Within Thirty Miles'. By the end of the year they were both living in Brighton, where they created 'Masks', and would reconvene in 1981 at a Cornish bungalow to record the almost-polished work, 'Ground Zero' using Andrew's new Korg MS10. A period of relative silence followed, with David studying in Strasbourg and Andrew working on solo material, before meeting up in 1982 armed with an ARP Odyssey and 4-track portastudio to record 'Head', which would be their final release for YHR in 1983. The later tracks included here were released sporadically on compilations including Dave Henderson's 'The Elephant Table Album' before they would change their name to Pump for the legendary 'Decoration Of The Duma Continues' in 1987. Cherry-picked by the group's early supporter and Forced Nostalia boss, Fré De Vos, '1979-85' paints a particularly affecting portrait of dark and accursed early Industrial music tinged with an unheimlich south coast scent that'll appeal to fans of early NWW, Coil, Portion Control, SPK. Highly Recommended.
