christiaan virant - Fistful of Buddha
The man jointly responsible for the Buddha Machine steps forth with a debut solo album exploring the space between ambient and neo-classical musics. Christian was born in Hong Kong, schooled and classically trained in South China and resides in Beijing, where he founded one of China's pioneering noise acts, FM3. 'Fistful Of Buddha' draws upon this experience and a worldly knowledge of outré sonics to meld Eastern and Western instrumentation with a contemplative sophistication. Slow moving repetition and incremental evolution is key to his sound here, opening expansive spaces where where keening strings and subtly dynamic electronics move with Zen-like mood and pace across nine parts.
