various - Brownswood ElectrIc 3
Culled after a long online trawl through Soundcloud streams and Bandcamp pages, 'Brownswood Electric 3' is the latest in Gilles Peterson's bumper Brownswood compilations and maybe the most intriguing. Focusing on the kind of low-end baiting sci-fi electronic dancefloor worriers that fall somewhere between Joker and Gemmy's purple WOW and Floating Points' jazzy neo-house, this is cracking stuff from beginning to end. We could name artists but it wouldn't do you much good, these are, for the most part, a bunch of newbies, and the music's as urgent as you'd hope from kids trying to prove themselves. Highlights are thick and fast, but Aftawerks' 'Girl' is an endearingly tape saturated rap/acid crossover, and Lost Twin's 'Nothing' brings back IDM cheese dreams with just enough style to pull it off.
