sutekh hexen with andrew liles - Breed In Me The Darkness
San Franciscan black metallers Sutekh Hexen have been dropping jaws under the radar for some time now, but this latest long player should set them firmly in the sights of any self respecting disciples of darkness. Teaming up with veteran purveyor of blackened ambient music and Nurse With Wound alum Andrew Liles was a smart move, and we find him pushing down his bloody fingerprints on two of the band's most eroded tracks to date. Stretching each into near twenty-minute epics, Liles begins by transforming 'We Once Walked Upon These Coals' from gaseous industrial drone into a collision of haunted piano and balls-out metal. It's not the most obvious pairing of sounds but it works, sounding as subversive and nihilistic as you'd hope from someone with such an enviable canon. Sutekh Hexen's 'Selling Light To Lesser Gods' shows them at their noisiest, throwing up a wall of distorted axe mongering which Liles subsequently breaks down in a Koner-esque shimmer of low frequencies and gong sounds, before allowing the track to erupt into ear damaging distortion. This is revelatory stuff yet again from Sutekh Hexen, and proof that they're one of the world's finest metal bands right now, totally unafraid to push against the norm.
