robert hood - Motor: Nighttime World 3
After more than 20 years of definitive Detroit practice, Rob Hood presents what is arguably his best material in years. 'Motor: Nighttime World 3' consolidates and refines everything that was already great about Hood's music into a sublime and compelling narrative worthy of a sci-fi film to match. By and large he's dropped the tempo and upped the lushness, still adhering to a minimal agenda but juicing that bit more out of every move so everything feels crucial to the wider picture and in the moment. Perhaps most shocking are the hip hop tempo pieces and those which don't rely on steady 4/4 throbs, like the positive projection of 'Better Life', the Kratfwerk gone after-hours vibes of 'The Wheel' or the solemnity of 'Slow Motion Katrina', which all regulate the pace and flow of the LP beautifully alongside the pronounced Latin shuffle and sheer synthscaping of 'Learning' or the opening flush of cascading chords and trickling rhythms in 'The Exodos'. But fear not techno fiends, when he's in a motorik gear the results are made even more striking by contrast, especially with the sequencer and drum machine purity of 'Drive (The Age Of Automation)' and the creamy sci-fi swivel of 'Torque One' and the intricate, bleeping kink of 'A Time To Rebuild'. Basically, it's highly recommended to fans of the finest techno, electronica and sci-fi soundtracks.
