drvg cvltvre - Everything Oblivion
Drvg Cvltvre is the current vehicle for Vincent Koreman's dark and grotty Dutch DiscoTech fantasies. Aside from recent ructions on his brilliant Snug Life label - home to top records by Leyland Kirby, Ekoplekz and Cosmic Dennis Greenidge - long-term observers may know his previous material as Ra-X, including the brilliant 'Opium Den' sessions on Mighty Robot (go track 'em down!), or his various missives on Angelmaker or Bunker Records. But we're only scraping the surface there; he's been at it for over 15 years now and that experience strongly manifests throughout 'Everything Oblivion'. With a dilated scope beyond many in that insular scene, he absorbs fractals from dark pop, acidic new beat and skewed boogie into his rugged, sludgy framework, engineering a narcotic, primal, psychedelic sound which certainly warrants his nom de plume. At times we're strongly reminded of V/VM's classic New Beat tributes, at others the crooked deconstructions of Kassem Mosse or the weirdest output from the whole Acido records gang, but there's an uncanny sense of playful arrangement and humour at work which is entirely Koreman's own, and makes this album a real stand out. Highly Recommended.
