woebot - Hallo
Well, we weren't expecting this. For his fourth album, much respected music journalist, blogger and record collector Matthew Ingram, aka Woebot, makes the relatively radical decision to reveal his own vocals and drop the samples, and with proper unexpected results too. It's practically pop music, but with all of Ingram's knowledge and understanding of musical undercurrents delicately filtered through into the mix, betraying an obvious affection for the mannered art school vocals of Robert Wyatt or Brian Eno, but perhaps most closely correlated with the DIY aesthetic and quintessentially English art(iculation) of The Shadow Ring, Position Normal, Broadcast and even The Kinks. The lyrics follow a simple, but strictly economic formula fitting with the stripped down and classic rock set-up of guitar, percussion, and some harmonica with sparing effects, making for an engrossing twelve track curio with strong appeal to those restless listeners always on the lookout for the unexpected.
