spiritualized - Sweet Heart Sweet Light
'Sweet Heart Sweet Light' has the distinct sound of a comedown. More restrained and pulled-apart than the band's crowning glory 'Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space', it seems that to go forward Pierce has sought to look back, specifically on his well-trodden obsession with Lou Reed. Reed's druggy post-Velvets experimentations haunt 'Sweet Heart Sweet Light' from beginning to end, but Pierce has wisely chosen not to make a straight up rock record, and smears the tracks with an orchestral flourish you'd more likely expect to hear from John Williams. It might not have the grit of those early records but there's a woozy theatrical bent to 'Sweet Heart...' that is hard not to fall for, and an almost Bacharach quality that hints at where Pierce might be going in the next stage of Spiritualized's development.
