ohayo - The State We Are In
Ohayo is the union of three talented Swedish musicians, Johan Berthling (Tape), Andreas Söderström (Ass), and Per Eklund, who arrived at 'The State We Are In' after time spent together as El Perro del Mar's backing band. Entirely instrumental, yet lyrically involving , they converge on a softly hushed, richly conversational style here, melding elements of folk and jazz with an improvisor's intuition and detailed, nuanced approach to playing, recording and production that makes their individual outputs so well regarded in their fields. The album was gradually pieced together between 2010-2011 at Summa in Stockholm, over which time they honed their style to a patiently meditative, calmly flowing dialogue between guitar, hammond organ, drums, double bass and some trumpet. Never hurried, but with a purposeful sense of space and timing, their combined efforts speak volumes which cannot be summarised here. It's probably best to say they remind us of the most tender, organic elements of The Boats, Tape, or Tunng all rolled into one, and then swaddled in cashmere.
