knuckleduster (robert lippok and debashis sinha) - Nuukoono
**Deluxe fold-out packaging/liner notes and CD housed in slim, wax-paper slipcase** Knuckleduster is an engrossing new project conceived by the esteemed, Berlin-based sound artist Robert Lippok and "trans-cultural pioneer" Debashis Sinha (Canada/India). The pair first collaborated in 2007 following lengthy discussions over the internet surrounding their mutual fascination with sound and music production. Their first performance in Toronto apparently went so well they decided to pursue the project further, eventually fusing their wealth of improvised and highly disciplined techniques on this, their first CD. It was recorded in Berlin at the famous Studio P4 and at Studio Bleibel by Tarwater's Bernd Jestram, beautifully capturing the nuance and darkly fragrant essence of the duo's instinctive collaborations, affording a vivid taste of their tangible, deeply refined confluence of ideas. To try and bracket Kunckleduster, expect rich, sonorous basses and a panoply of glinting, glanced percussion influenced by myriad cultures and reduced to unique, minimalist gestures suffused with daubs of widely diffused synth and other unknown sources. Their combined effect is reflective, stoic and yet somehow lush, combining traces of Robert's work in To Rococo Rot with a more outernational spirit recalling the likes of Burnt Friedman and Shackleton, and with the atmospheric attention to detail of The Haxan Cloak. Recommended.
