Debut album from My Best Fiend, the latest guitar-wielders to sign with Warp. The band deal in lush, wall-of-sound orch-pop, hugely indebted to Jason Pierce's Spiritualized in terms of both songwriting and arrangement, but with shades too of Phil Spector, Neil Young, Mercury Rev, Tom Petty, Soft Bulletin-era Flaming Lips and all those other cosmic cowboys. Created in a Brooklyn garage, it sounds more like it was crafted on the right side of a peyote comedown in the Mojave desert, and will go down well with Americana-inclined pop-pickers and fans of unreconstructed, rousing, redemptive rock music.
