moebius & renziehausen - Ersatz
Superb, strangely funked-up oddity from Cluster's Dieter Moebius and his artist friend, Karl Renziehausen. Originally released in 1990, it was Dieter's first release in four years since the excellent 'Blue Moon' soundtrack in 1986 and showcased a sharp swerve into purely digital tones and almost dancefloor friendly rhythms. But of course it's still Moebius and there's still a helplessly experimental streak which makes this album such a strange, anachronistic pleasure. Pushed by stripped-down yet prominent, punchy machine rhythms, the duo vibe across a spectrum of slow moving sci-fi and Kraut-ische synth sounds, perhaps acknowledging the sort of unheimlich happenings in the Industrial scenes and left-of-centre dance styles explored by Psychic TV or the likes of Pelican Daughters while unmistakably retaining their experimental swerve. If you were under the impression that these guys had kinda fallen off or lost their creative mojo by this period, this album will definitely make you think again. RIYL slow disco, Hype Williams, Pelican Daughters, queer electronics.
