jason urick - I Love You
Jason Urick's excellent sophomore album for Thrill Jockey is a strangely affective mix of Techno-pop and synthdrone abstractions strongly recalling moments from Oneohtrix Point Never's now-classic 'Returnal', and also elements of Mark Carlson's 'Particle Language' LP or Harmonizer's 'World Complete'. 'I Love You' revolves around Urick's enchanting use of dissonant, cyber-surreal vocoder harmonies and layered synth hues, opening a inter-dimensional portal and luring us wide-eyed through extraterrestrial synth topologies. If one were to trust their instincts, you'd insta-cop this from the transporting aerial glide of opener 'I Love You'; a breathtaking soar through light-headed atmospheric pressure changes and tingling ambient harmonix. This leads into the more rhythm-driven gravity of 'Don't Digital', which initially feels like a Holy Other cut thrown 500% slower, before a woozy, underwater string symphony swirls and suffuses the senses with the lushest intent. Flipside, from outer space and underwater we enter the more earthbound raga tones of 'Ageless Isms'; wattle & daubed layers of prickly synth noise wall a weird temple ritual which we only hear from the outside, before granted entry to the Emeralds-like kosmich splendour of 'The Crying Song (Album Mix)' and the ancient-sounding sacrificial ascendance of 'Syndromes'.
